About me

January 2nd, 2009

Hi, my name is Neil Jansen, and this is my website.  I started a weblog to share my projects online.  I’ve been working on one or more electronic/mechanical projects for as long as I can remember.  A few of these have made it to popular websites, and even a few magazines.  Currently I’m designing an electronics package for UAV’s (including kalman filtered intertial, barometric, and GPS sensors, infrared camara, long-range datalink, and a ground station uplink),  designing a DMX512 intelligent light controller for a company in Orlando, and slowly but surely getting the robotic equipment in the garage up and running (CNC milling machine, CNC gantry router, and surface mount pick-and-place machine).

Stuff about me:

  • Age: 27
  • Home town: Melbourne, FL
  • Political views: Libertarian
  • Religious views: We came from monkeys
  • Interests: Aviation, Linux, robotics, programming, hardware hacking, blogging, cycling, photography (including motion-control time-lapse, aerial photography, hdr, and night photography)
  • Favorite TV shows: LOST, South Park, Family Guy, Robot Chicken, anything Star Trek, Stargate SG-1 / Atlantis, Arrested Development
  • Music: I pretty much boycott anything the RIAA touches. The only mainstream bands I still listed to, I consider “grandfathered in” since I already owned their CDs: Sublime, DJ Shadow, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rage Against the Machine. There are a ton of places to get great music from without lining the RIAA’s pockets, for example PodSafe Music and SomaFM’s Groove Salad.
  • Favorite movies: Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, Fight Club, I am Legend, The Dark Night, Iron Man, Contact, The Machine Girl, Kung Fu Hustle, Howl’s Moving Castle, Idiocracy, Being John Malkovich, The Fifth Element, Dogma, Blood Diamond, The Big Lebowski, Cast Away, V for Vendetta
  • Favorite books: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams; Hyperspace by Michio Kaku
